Hubert Davis and the North Carolina Tar Heels finished out the 2025-26 college basketball season with a 24-8 overall record, which included 12-6 in ACC play. This was good enough to earn UNC the No. 6 seed in the 2026 NCAA Tournament, hoping to turn their recent March Madness luck around.
However, North Carolina could not get it done in the first round, falling to Terrence Hill Jr. and No. 11 seed VCU on Thursday. Hill tied the game at 75 with a layup with 11 seconds left in regulation, sending it to overtime. But the Tar Heels could not find a bucket in the extra period, scoring just three points, all from the free-throw line, which ultimately cost them a second-round appearance.

Davis has now completed his fifth season as North Carolina’s head coach after replacing Roy Williams in 2021. While he has an ACC Coach of the Year award to his name, the results at UNC have been disappointing. Davis led the Tar Heels to the national championship game in his first season in Chapel Hill, but North Carolina has not matched that success since. The program missed the tournament entirely in 2022-23 after being the preseason No. 1 and has suffered first-round exits in each of the past two seasons.
And following the March Madness loss to VCU, rumors have spread that this could have been the last game for Davis as the head coach of UNC basketball. Even ESPN's Pete Thamel has noted that Davis could be on his way out.
“Do not expect Davis to be fired outright," Thamel wrote. "Any kind of departure would be synchronized, likely between he and the school. Hubert Davis is a legend at North Carolina and will be treated with that type of respect.”
And while nothing has been confirmed just yet regarding the coach's future, on Sunday, it was revealed that the final episode of Davis' weekly radio show, "Hubert Davis Live!," which was originally scheduled for Monday night, has been postponed. This could perhaps be a sign that Davis' time in Chapel Hill is coming to a close.
"UNC coach Hubert Davis’ weekly radio show — scheduled for Monday night at Top Of The Hill — has been postponed," 247Sports' Noah Weiskopf wrote on X. "It was slated to be the final one of the season."
The Tar Heels will now turn to the offseason in hopes of getting back to the NCAA Tournament next year. But they will likely be doing it without star freshman Caleb Wilson, who appears to be heading to the NBA.
