Main Event Breakdown
In the main event, Polish veteran Mateusz Gamrot faces the surging Quillan Salkilld in a five-round lightweight bout.
Gamrot, a mainstay in the top-10 known for his relentless grappling pressure, is taking on the role of the ultimate gatekeeper. He has alternated wins and losses over his last five fights but has showcased his elite grappling ability with key victories over Rafael dos Anjos and Arman Tsarukyan.
Mateusz Gamrot
Gamrot’s fight against Tsarukyan had some of the best back-and-forth grappling sequences in an Octagon:
The 35-year-old is adept at grinding down his opponents, and his experience in high-stakes, five-round wars is a significant factor.
Quillian Salkilld
Standing across from him is the 26-year-old Australian striking sensation Salkilld, who has been nothing short of spectacular in his UFC tenure. A graduate of Dana White's Contender Series, Salkilld has gone 5-0 in the promotion, securing four first-round finishes and earning four Performance of the Night bonuses in the process.
His most recent victories were first-round stoppages over Jamie Mullarkey and Beneil Dariush, demonstrating devastating finishing ability.
On top of his more well-rounded skillset, Salkilld holds significant physical advantages in height and reach, which he will need to use effectively to keep the wrestling-heavy Gamrot at bay.
Keys Statistics
While numbers don’t tell the whole story, the official UFC matchup statistics definitely give us as viewers some insight as to how their fight may play out.
The key to the fight lies in the battle for positioning. Salkilld, who lands an average of 5.01 strikes per minute compared to Gamrot’s 3.21, must utilize his jab and keep the fight at distance to avoid being pinned against the cage and taken down by Gamrot's unrelenting grappling approach.
Conversely, Gamrot will look to close the distance and stick to Salkilld, neutralizing the Australian’s length and forcing the fight to the mat, where he can impose his will. While his striking offense is not as eye-catching as Salkilld’s, Gamrot actually has statistically much better striking defense at 60% compared to Salkilld’s 45%.
This is not necessarily a significant step up in competition for the Australian, as he has defeated Dariush, who previously bested Gamrot back at UFC 280. Additionally, Salkilld surprisingly averages more takedowns than Gamrot per 15 minutes, at 7.25 compared to 5.22.
The main event matchup will be an intriguing stylistic clash, with the winner possibly getting booked for a title eliminator for their next match.
