The U.S. women's hockey team has been all over the headlines lately.

The U.S. women topped Canada in the gold medal game at the Winter Olympics. The U.S. men's team later defeated Canada, 2-1, in overtime. President Trump called the U.S. men's team in the locker room and invited them to the White House. He joked that he would "have" to invite the women's team, too. The U.S. men received criticism for laughing at the joke.

President Trump invited the U.S. women to the White House, too, though they declined, citing schedule conflicts.

"We are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold medal-winning U.S. Women's Hockey Team and deeply appreciate the recognition of their extraordinary achievement," the U.S. women's team said in a statement released Monday. "Due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games, the athletes are unable to participate. They were honored to be included and are grateful for the acknowledgment."
