U.S. skier Mikaela Shiffrin went 0-for-2 on Sunday after missing the podium in the women’s giant slalom final. Shiffrin finished 11th in her second event of the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, extending her drought. Shiffrin entered this year’s Winter Games after failing to medal in six events at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
Shiffrin’s latest loss comes after she finished fourth at the team combined event on Monday. Shiffrin was paired with skiing sensation Breezy Johnson for the inaugural team combined event.
Johnson, who was coming off a gold medal win at the downhill final, finished first in the downhill portion of the team combined. Shiffrin, however, came up short in the slalom. Their combined time of 2:21.97 was 0.6 seconds behind U.S. teammates Jacqueline Wiles and Paula Moltzan, who finished third.

Shiffrin was not at her best again on Sunday at the giant slalom. She finished with a time of 2:14.12, which was only good for 11th place. This latest loss extended the 30-year-old’s podium-less streak to eight consecutive events.
Despite the loss, Shiffrin remained positive on social media. She sent an optimistic message on Instagram following her performance at the giant slalom final.
“What an incredible day showcasing GS ski racing today…days like these are such wonderful reminders of why this sport is so easy to love.❤️” Shiffrin wrote.

The silver lining for Shiffrin is that her best event is yet to come. The Vail, Colorado native entered the 2026 Winter Games with three Olympic medals under her belt. She has two gold medals. She won gold at the 2014 Sochi Olympics at the slalom final. Shiffrin will be looking to reclaim her crown on Wednesday.
Shiffrin’s third and final event will be the slalom final. It is widely considered her strongest event. The qualifying round is scheduled on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. ET, with the final slated for 7:30 a.m. ET.
