The first few days of the Winter Olympics are always about setting the tone, and for Team USA, that moment arrived sooner than expected. Breezy Johnson stepped into the spotlight with a breakthrough performance that not only opened the United States’ medal count in Milan-Cortina but also marked the first Olympic podium of her own career.

As the celebrations settled and the reality of the moment started to sink in, Johnson shared that the experience of finally standing at the top and wearing that long-awaited gold has come with a few surprisingly relatable adjustments she’s still figuring out.

After the race, Johnson shared a pretty unexpected detail during her press conference. She's already had a small mishap with her brand-new gold medal. She explained that in the middle of celebrating and jumping around after the win, something gave way and the medal ended up getting slightly damaged.

"I was jumping in excitement and it broke. It's not like crazy broken but it is a little broken," she said.

She clarified that the medal itself is actually fine. The issue was that it came loose from the lanyard while she was celebrating, which is what caused the minor damage in the first place.

Winning gold was a huge high for Johnson, but the day wasn’t purely celebratory. Soon after her run, attention shifted when teammate Lindsey Vonn went down hard on the Tofane course and had to be flown out for treatment. With the event paused for an extended stretch, Johnson remained at the finish, and the long wait seemed to take a toll she was seen wiping away tears as updates trickled in.

The moment likely stirred up some difficult memories of her own. Cortina is the same place where she suffered a serious knee injury during a training session in 2022, a setback that ultimately kept her out of the Beijing Games.

There may still be another chance for her to add to her success in the women’s combined team event, potentially alongside Mikaela Shiffrin an opportunity that would carry even more meaning after everything she’s been through.
