Sophie Cunningham may have graduated from Missouri, but one former SEC head coach turned U.S. Senator has found nothing to hate about her.
Video from the recent game between the Indiana Fever and the Atlanta Dream showed Cunningham being one of the few players to place her hand over her heart during the national anthem. While it remains debatable whether it’s actually a requirement to do so, plenty of people applauded Cunningham for an expression of patriotism.
Among them is former Ole Miss and Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville – now a U.S. Senator from Alabama – who took to X this morning and declared that Cunningham is “a true PATRIOT.”
“[Sophie Cunningham] is a true PATRIOT,” Tuberville wrote.
Patriotism or Excessive?
But this isn’t the first time that there’s been a discussion over whether someone is truly “patriotic” for placing their hand over their heart for the national anthem. Plenty of users went into the comments section and strongly stated that they don’t and refuse to let it be a measure of their own patriotism.
“Come on Coach. I love you man, but it’s the national anthem and not the Pledge of Allegiance. Standing respectfully with headgear removed is customary,” one user remarked.
“You don’t have to put your hand over your heart for the national anthem. We do that for the pledge of allegiance,” another pointed out.
“The President dont even do that you big Drama Queen,” a third wrote.

Sophie Cunningham has become the new favorite player of many Republicans and conservatives over her stance on transgender issues, which is one area where they agree on.
Though much like Caitlin Clark, it is possible that the support only goes as far as Cunningham’s continued agreement with them on all political items. Cunningham doesn’t talk much about her stances on other social issues.
