Ty Simpson is one of the increasingly few rookie first-round QBs that has no expectations on him as a rookie, as the Los Angeles Rams have reigning MVP Matthew Stafford as their starter. But while Simpson may hope to one day take Stafford's job, for now he's just enjoying life as his teammate.
Speaking to Taylor Lewan of the Bussin' with the Boys podcast, Simpson praised Stafford for being so nice to him and helping him adjust to the NFL. He highlighted how "cerebral" and "smart" Stafford is on and off the field.
“It’s the same thing I did in college, except it’s a different level,” Simpson said. “I’ve learned more ball in the last four months of being with him than I had in four years of being in college. He’s just so, like, cerebral. Just understands, and he’s so smart with everything.
“It’s so cool. I appreciate him so much because he’s been nothing but nice to me.”
Simpson's Future
Ty Simpson spent four seasons at the University of Alabama, initially waiting behind standout quarterbacks Bryce Young and Jalen Milroe before earning the starting job in 2025. Simpson saw limited action during his first three seasons but remained with the Crimson Tide through the coaching transition from Nick Saban to Kalen DeBoer. His perseverance paid off in his lone season as Alabama's starter, when he led the Tide to an 11-4 record, an SEC title game, a College Football Playoff victory, and a Rose Bowl trip.

In 31 career games, Simpson completed 334 of 523 passes for 3,948 yards, 28 touchdowns, and just five interceptions, while adding five rushing touchdowns. Nearly all of that production came during his breakout 2025 campaign, when he threw for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns against only five interceptions. He finished his Alabama career holding the school record for the lowest career interception percentage and set several single-season passing marks.
Despite many draft analysts projecting very little in the way of NFL success for him, Simpson went No. 13 overall to the Rams in the 2026 NFL Draft and designated as their QB of the future. But for now, he can just enjoy sitting and learning under the reigning NFL MVP.
