The Dallas Cowboys have not made a Super Bowl since Troy Aikman led them to a championship 30 years ago. The Hall of Fame quarterback is perplexed by his former team’s drought.
Speaking to longtime sports anchor Dale Hansen on Dallas Dialogue, Aikman confessed that he thought he would win another Super Bowl after the Cowboys collected three championships from the 1992 to 1995 seasons. The ESPN broadcaster is surprised that America’s Team still hasn’t won an NFC title since.
“It’s hard to fathom,” Aikman said. “It really is because we see it, we talk every year about parity and how we’ve seen teams that have gone from last to first and teams that have not been historically very good, and yet they still make a run. They make it to a championship game, or they’ll make it to a Super Bowl. And yet for the Cowboys, that hasn’t happened.”
Aikman couldn’t explain why the Cowboys have continued to fall short.
“It’s hard to put your finger on exactly why because when you look at the number of regular-season wins that they’ve had, they’re probably top five over the last two decades,” Aikman added. “And yet, it hasn’t translated into the postseason.”

Aikman gave his former franchise a bit too much credit; the Cowboys rank ninth with 193 regular-season wins from 2005 to 2025. Yet every team ahead of them won at least one Super Bowl during those two decades.
Dallas has made six playoff appearances in the last 12 years, but none have lasted beyond the NFC Divisional Round. The Cowboys haven’t even played in an NFC Championship Game since Aikman led them to a 38-27 win over Brett Favre’s Green Bay Packers on Jan. 14, 1996.
Aikman hopes Cowboys fans get to see the team back on top eventually. They’ll first need to return to the postseason after consecutive seven-win campaigns.
“Cowboys fans, they deserve better,” Aikman said. “I do know that. This is the Cowboys, the flagship franchise. And the fact that the Cowboys, in 30 years, have not made it to a championship game – let alone a Super Bowl – it’s hard to fathom.”
