It was sadly announced Thursday night that longtime Tennessee sports reporter Wes Rucker passed away. He was 43 years old.
Rucker got his big break as a reporter for The Chattanooga Times Free Press before eventually taking his talents to 247Sports and CBS. He most recently helped WBIR with its coverage of the Tennessee Volunteers.
Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio was first to report that Rucker died Thursday in a car accident. A statement from the Knoxville Police Department later confirmed this heartbreaking news.
“At around 4:50 p.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2026, Knoxville Police Department officers responded to a five-vehicle crash on I-40 West near Cedar Bluff Road,” the Knoxville Police Department said in a statement. “The driver of a vehicle involved in the crash was pronounced dead at scene. The investigation has revealed that a vehicle was stopped for traffic when it was rear-ended by another vehicle, resulting in minor damage. Another vehicle then struck the second vehicle, setting off a chain reaction. Seconds later, a large pickup truck ran into and on top of an involved vehicle, fatally injuring the adult male driver of the vehicle it collided with.”
College football world reacts to this tragic news.
As you'd imagine, reporters around the country are devastated over Rucker's death.
"This is a sad and terrible tragedy. Wes was an exceptional reporter in Tennessee and an even better family man," Dan Wetzel of ESPN said. "My thoughts are with his loved ones."
"This is such sad news,:" Chris Vannini of The Athletic wrote. "Wes worked so hard. He always talked so much about his family. Prayers with them."
"Gutted tonight at this news," SEC Network's Peter Burns said. "Wes was incredibly talented and always kind with his time to talk about the Vols. Damn."
"Wes Rucker was as constant of a presence in UT sports as anyone since i was in high school, one of my very first twitter follows. An incredible writer and even better family man. Praying hard for his family, this is absolutely devastating," another person commented.
Our thoughts are with Rucker's loved ones during this difficult time.
