Trey Yesavage was pleased with his performance after making his return to the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night.
Yesavage pitched two innings against the Baltimore Orioles in his first appearance since undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. The right-hander allowed one hit and one earned run while striking out three and walking none on 40 pitches.
Pete Alonso accounted for the only damage against Yesavage, hitting a solo home run during the Blue Jays’ 4-3 loss. Despite the result, Yesavage felt comfortable with his pitches after returning to the mound.
“Felt normal, liked the splitter. I thought I had really good command over it, same with the heater, the slider… just felt like I had everything whenever I wanted it, so was very pleased with how it went,” Yesavage said, via Hazel Mae.
Yesavage’s return came roughly six weeks after his knee surgery. He had been sidelined since Aug. 4, when he suffered the injury while warming up on the mound during a game against the Houston Astros.
The rookie right-hander had already dealt with a right shoulder issue earlier in the season before establishing himself in Toronto’s rotation. Before his knee injury, Yesavage had posted a 5-5 record with a 3.65 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 93.2 innings across 18 starts.
His return gave the Blue Jays another opportunity to evaluate him before the offseason. Yesavage did not need an extended minor league rehab assignment before rejoining the major league club.

Toronto ultimately dropped Monday’s game after Alonso’s two-run homer in the eighth inning. The loss left the Blue Jays at 77-80 with five games remaining and 3.5 games behind the final American League Wild Card spot, according to the supplied standings.
While the Blue Jays still have games remaining, Yesavage’s biggest takeaway was his own health and how his pitches felt. His first appearance back provided Toronto with an encouraging look at one of its young starters heading into the offseason.
