The Philadelphia Phillies are looking to continue building momentum on Friday against the Miami Marlins. What began as a disastrous start to the 2026 season, one that ultimately led to longtime manager Rob Thomson being fired earlier this week, has suddenly shifted.
Since bench coach Don Mattingly took over as interim manager, the Phillies have not lost, sweeping the San Francisco Giants in a much needed three game rebound.
One of the biggest positives from that series was the play of shortstop Trea Turner. The 30-year-old has struggled badly this season, performing well below expectations despite having eight years remaining on his 11-year, $300 million contract.
But Turner finally showed signs of life against San Francisco, collecting six hits in 14 plate appearances, including a home run and two RBIs, production far more in line with what Philadelphia expects from its All-Star shortstop.

However, Turner will not get the chance to extend that momentum on Friday. Ahead of the series opener in Miami, the Phillies announced their lineup and Turner was absent for the first time all season. Edmundo Sosa drew the start at shortstop, batting fifth, ending Turner’s streak of 31 consecutive starts to begin the year.
Fortunately for the Phillies, the decision is not injury related. Mattingly spoke with reporters during pregame and made it clear that Turner is simply receiving a scheduled rest day.
With the Phillies coming off a doubleheader on Thursday and now playing on Miami’s turf surface, Mattingly wanted to give Turner a break from the additional wear and tear. Turf fields are notoriously harder on players legs and joints, especially for infielders.
That is good news for a Phillies team that cannot afford to lose Turner, especially now that he finally appears to be trending upward.
Philadelphia still has significant ground to make up in the National League East. Their 12-19 record remains one of the worst in the league, but the roster is talented enough to climb back into contention, and their recent three game surge shows they may be turning a corner.
On Friday, they will look for a fourth straight win, even if they must do it without their All-Star shortstop in the starting lineup.
