The Portland Trail Blazers have dealt with their fair share of injuries this season, and although they currently sit in the tenth spot in the Western Conference, the future remains bright.

Most of that optimism stems from the emergence of Deni Avdija, who earned his first All‑Star selection this year. Avdija arrived in Portland in 2024 as part of a trade with the Washington Wizards, and since then he has fit seamlessly into the Trail Blazers’ system.

He has taken a major step forward as a playmaker, improved his perimeter shooting and become a force attacking the basket while creating for teammates.

Through 47 games, the 25‑year‑old small forward is averaging 25.0 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.8 assists while shooting 46.3% from the field and 34.1% from beyond the arc.

Avdija has dealt with setbacks this season, particularly in February, as lower‑back issues have persisted. The injury has placed him on the report frequently and forced him to miss games for maintenance.

That was the case before Sunday’s matchup against the Phoenix Suns, as Avdija was listed as a game‑time decision. It appeared he made it through warmups without discomfort, as he was included in the starting lineup and opened the game for Portland.

Unfortunately, he lasted less than a minute before heading back to the locker room, with Scoot Henderson entering in his place almost immediately. Moments later, the Trail Blazers announced that Avdija would not return due to a lower back injury.

This is significant because Avdija has become the centerpiece of Portland’s rebuild, and the offense is built around his ability to initiate, score and create advantages. Whenever he is sidelined, the Blazers lose their most reliable playmaker and the player who drives their identity. With the team fighting to stay in the postseason picture, his availability is essential.

As Portland continues to navigate a season filled with injuries, Avdija’s health will remain one of the defining factors in how competitive the Trail Blazers can remain down the stretch.
