Tony Romo has heard the criticism.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback turned CBS broadcaster was a sensation in the booth early on. Romo burst onto the broadcasting scene in 2017, taking the No. 1 job at CBS after retiring from the NFL. However, in recent years, he's faced some criticism for apparent lack of preparation, over-talking and more.

Romo knows this.

He accepts that he can do better at times while also understanding that criticism is part of the business.

"I think anytime you're in a position like we are, we're on the air for three-and-a-half hours, you're always trying to do the best you can in everything. There's always gonna be moments where there's great stuff and then other stuff, it's just part of being in your position," Romo said in an interview with SiriusXM's Adam Schein on Schein on Sports.

"You just go back to work and you do a great job. That's the fun part about this, it's sports and it makes it fun. We're just trying to make everyone enjoy the show, learn a little bit and have a great time. So, to me, it's what makes sports amazing, it's fun."

Some have pushed CBS to make a change in the No. 1 NFL broadcasting booth. Some would like to see No. 2 broadcasters, like Greg Olsen at FOX or J.J. Watt at CBS, getting a chance.

However, that's not going to happen.

Why? Romo is too highly paid. He has a 10-year, $180 million contract, that was signed in 2020. It runs through the 2030 season.

Romo's salary is higher than several NFL star players

Romo's 10 year, $180 million contract is bigger than several NFL star players, including:

  • Bears QB Caleb Williams: $9 million per year
  • Patriots QB Drake Maye: $9 million per year
  • Ravens RB Derrick Henry: $15 million per year
  • Colts RB Jonathan Taylor: $14 million per year
  • Seahawks WR Cooper Kupp: $15 million per year
  • Giants WR Malik Nabers: $7 million per year
  • Chiefs TE Travis Kelce: $12 million per year

Is Romo worth the kind of money that CBS is paying him?
