Tony Romo’s nine-year run as a lead NFL analyst at CBS Sports is over following his July arrest in Wisconsin for operating while intoxicated.
CBS announced Friday that Romo will not return to its NFL broadcasts. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback had been on indefinite leave since the arrest, with J.J. Watt replacing him on the network’s No. 1 broadcast team.
“CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways,” the network said. “We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward.”
Romo, 46, was arrested following a traffic stop in Milwaukee on July 23. Romo pleaded no contest Sept. 1 and had his driving privileges revoked for six months.
The former NFL quarterback also received orders to install an ignition interlock device, complete an alcohol assessment program, and pay a $784 fine.
Romo had four years and $72 million remaining on the 10-year, $180 million contract he signed with CBS in 2020, and both sides reached a financial settlement before Friday’s announcement.
Romo released his own statement after the news of the split emerged on Friday afternoon.
“I’m proud of what I accomplished at CBS Sports over the last nine years,” Romo said. “I approached my role as a game analyst the way I’ve approached everything in my life — with a desire to win and be the best that I can be.”

Added Romo: “I’m going to use this time to take a break, something I’ve never done before, and focus on my health and my family before moving on to my next opportunity.
“I am grateful for my time with CBS Sports and for the continued support of my family and friends, as well as the NFL community and fans.”
