Todd Monken will soon decide who the Cleveland Browns' QB1 would be between Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson and Dillon Gabriel. The new head coach faces the unenviable task of naming the winner of the job before training camp ends. He recently gave an update on the former Colorado Buffaloes star's chances.
Monken mentioned Sanders and Watson both impressing during spring practices, and may have hinted that they have the inside track to being the starter.
“Whether it's Shedeur, whether it's Deshaun or whether it's Dillon, our quarterback situation, you've got to find a way to write that," Monken said. "I do think Deshaun and Shedeur had really good springs. I really believe it’s no better time to be the head coach of the Cleveland Browns."
Sanders dropped to the fifth round of the draft last year, and the Browns snagged him at No. 144 overall. He slid despite experts projecting him as a top pick following his strong collegiate career. The 24-year-old started his rookie season buried in Cleveland's depth chart but somehow emerged to be the QB1.
He started the team's last seven games, completing 120-of-212 passes for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Gabriel initially took over under center after the Browns traded Joe Flacco. However, Gabriel sustained a concussion, which opened the door for Sanders to start.
Cleveland's QB battle is expected to be competitive, with Watson looking to reclaim his spot. Sanders and Gabriel, on the other hand, will fight for the job to cement their roles with the franchise.
