Among 2026’s fantasy baseball rookie class TJ Rumfield was largely ignored in favor of sexier names like Konnor Griffin, Kevin McGonigle and JJ Wetherholt. Even though he hit five HR and drove in 13 runs in 23 spring training games, Rumfield went undrafted in most fantasy baseball leagues. In his first six games Rumfield has already made his presence felt and while he’s only rostered in 41% of Fantrax leagues, that ownership rate will likely quickly increase after this weekend’s waiver wire run.

Why TJ Rumfield Was the Forgotten Rookie Heading Into 2026

With Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt set to split time at first base this season for the Yankees, Rumfield was considered expendable, and he was traded to Colorado for reliever Angel Chivilli on January 28th. Despite being viewed as a high contact hitter, hitting 16 HR in 138 Triple-A games in 2025 didn’t make him a traditional elite slugging option that MLB teams and fantasy baseball managers expect from the corner infield position. The Yankees also left him off their 40-man roster in 2025, and that caused him to fall off just about every prospect analysts’ radar.

Draft ADP vs. Pre-Season Expectations

You’d be hard pressed to find Rumfield on any of the major MLB prospect analysts' top 100 rankings and his preseason ADP was so low that he wasn’t included in Fantasy Pros’ consensus ADP listings, which features 597 players. Even now, the most optimistic of the rest of season major projection models have Rumfield batting .270, hitting only 13 HR and driving in 55 RBI in 125 games.

TJ Rumfield Early 2026 Performance: What the Numbers Show

So far, and as this article is being written, Rumfield has only played six games, his high contact batting profile seems to have followed him to the big leagues.

Stats, Metrics, and Role Clarity

Rumfield is batting .429 and has a HR and a double in his first 21 big- league at-bats. His quick start comes on the heels of a very productive spring in which Rumfield batted .286 and had more walks (5) than strikeouts (2) in 64 plate appearances. His respectable 21.7% K rate in his first six regular-season games is consistent with his minor-league career range, however he’s chasing pitches at a high rate, and that is a concern.

Rumfield’s average exit velocity thus far (83.6 mph) is below league average, but his launch angle and fly ball rates are above average. With Rumfield elevating his batted balls and his hard-hit rate at league average, if he continues to play every day, he could potentially eclipse 15 total HR this season.

Rumfield has batted fifth in each of his first six games and played first base in five of those games. Based on Rumfield’s excellent defensive skills and the fact that Rockies 1B/OF prospect Charlie Condon started the season in Triple-A, it’s likely that Rumfield will get a long run at the other hot corner. If he does eventually slump, Condon would likely be the favorite to take Rumfield’s place.

TJ Rumfield 2026 Fantasy Outlook If He Sustains This Pace

Projected Production and Roster Value

Playing his home games in Coors Field should help Rumfield’s offensive production. Based on Statcast’s Park Factors, Coors Field was ranked as the most hitter friendly park in relation to base hits and 12th most conducive to home runs in 2025. Based on Rumfield’s minor league track record and plate discipline, if he sticks with the Rockies for the entire season a .265/.340/.425 triple slash is within reach. He could approach 20 HR this season but a total in the mid to upper teens is more realistic.

Roster Strategy for TJ Rumfield in 2026 Fantasy

As long as Rumfield can hold onto his everyday role as the Rockies’ first baseman, he will have value in 12-team or deeper fantasy baseball leagues. His above average plate discipline increases his fantasy baseball value in points leagues that penalize batter strikeouts.

Add, Stash, or Buy Low Decisions

Whenever deciding as to whether to add a player via the waiver wire you should always consider his value in relation to the player that you’ll have to drop in order to add him to your roster. Adding Rumfield makes sense if you play in a deep league and need help at the corner infield position. I added Rumfield in a league in which I realized I didn’t have a backup first baseman. I eventually put him in my starting lineup at the UT spot and benched the struggling Zach McKinstry.

TJ Rumfield 2026 Fantasy: The Forgotten Rookie Is Breaking Out

Like the headline says, Rumfield is breaking out, but there’s risk involved in rostering rookies and it doesn’t take long for a fantasy baseball rookie to transform from a breakout to a bust. If you do add Rumfield keep track of his progress regularly, and if he slumps get ready to cut bait. It might be too late for him to be a buy low option in some leagues, but if you already roster Rumfield and he’s sitting on your bench, you might want to try to trade him away while his fantasy baseball value is at its highest. Sell high if you can.
