The Detroit Tigers have fallen on hard times over the past couple of weeks, currently enduring a five-game losing streak.
In hopes of providing a spark to their playoff push, the Tigers announced they have signed veteran right-handed reliever Tyler Kinley to a major league contract. Kinley, 35, was released by the Atlanta Braves this past Friday after being designated for assignment.
To make room on the active roster, the Tigers optioned reliever Ty Madden to Triple-A Toledo. Detroit also designated pitcher Rickey Vanasco for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster.
Kinley is in his ninth MLB season and was in his second with the Braves after being acquired from the Colorado Rockies at last year’s trade deadline.
When the veteran right-hander arrived in Atlanta for the second half of 2025, he looked better than he ever had in his career. In 25 innings, Kinley posted a 0.72 ERA with 22 strikeouts and a 0.68 WHIP. Opponents batted a measly .126 against him.
However, that same level of dominance hasn’t followed Kinley into this season. In 42.2 innings, he has posted a 4.01 ERA with 42 strikeouts and a 1.29 WHIP. Opponents are batting .226 against him.
While Kinley may not be the savior the Tigers so desperately need right now, he’s more than capable of helping stabilize their bullpen.
Since August 10, Detroit’s bullpen has posted a 5.21 ERA, allowing 28 runs over 46.2 innings.
After trading franchise starter Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers, many thought the Tigers’ season was all but over. However, Detroit responded immediately after the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
The Tigers won three straight series, going 6-3 during that stretch and at one point pulling into a tie for the final AL wild-card spot.
Even after their recent collapse, going 1-8 over their last nine games, the Tigers remain firmly in contention. Detroit sits just 3.5 games back in the AL wild-card standings entering play Monday.
Their division rival Cleveland Guardians are currently tied with the Texas Rangers for that final spot.
With just 32 games remaining, time is quickly running out. Detroit has to put an end to this slide before it falls too far behind.
The road won’t get any easier. The Tigers begin a series tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays, who own the best record in the American League. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET.
