The Detroit Tigers are giving two of their young stars a break following a grueling day against the Cleveland Guardians.
Kevin McGonigle and Max Clark were out of the lineup Saturday after both played all 19 innings during Friday’s doubleheader at Progressive Field.
The Guardians swept the twin bill with a 7-6 walk-off win in Game 1 before taking the nightcap, 4-3, in 10 innings.
Detroit News Tigers reporter Chris McCosky first reported the decision on X, noting that the heavy workload prompted the Tigers to give both rookies the night off.
McGonigle and Clark were involved throughout the marathon. Clark went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the opener before going hitless in Game 2.
McGonigle delivered an RBI double during the nightcap and finished 2-for-5 as Detroit ultimately came up short in extra innings.
The rest day comes as both players continue gaining valuable major league experience during the final stretch of the season.
Clark has played 32 games since his promotion, while McGonigle has become a regular part of Detroit’s lineup.
Both players have also quickly emerged as central pieces of the Tigers’ future, making workload management increasingly important as the organization looks beyond 2026.
The decision is particularly understandable after Friday’s doubleheader required both players to spend nearly an entire day on the field.
Detroit entered Saturday at 64-77 and out of the postseason picture, while Cleveland remained in the middle of a tight American League playoff race.

That leaves the Tigers with little reason to push their young players unnecessarily following such an exhausting workload.
The remaining games will still give McGonigle and Clark opportunities to continue developing at the major league level.
For Saturday, however, Detroit chose recovery over another immediate appearance. After 19 innings against the Guardians in one day, the move gives two important young players a chance to reset before the Tigers continue their final stretch of the season.
