Jeff Greenberg has made his decision. The Detroit Tigers general manager has withdrawn from consideration for the vacant Detroit Red Wings head of hockey operations position, choosing to remain with the Tigers.
Greenberg informed the Red Wings of his decision Monday after being considered for the position. His choice keeps him focused on the baseball operation as Detroit continues working through a difficult 2026 season.
MLive’s Evan Woodbery reported Greenberg’s decision, which was later confirmed by the Tigers. Greenberg was considered an intriguing candidate for the Red Wings job because of his previous experience in hockey and baseball.
Before joining the Tigers, Greenberg worked in the Chicago Blackhawks’ front office and spent more than a decade with the Chicago Cubs. He became Detroit’s general manager in 2023 under president of baseball operations Scott Harris.
Through a team spokesperson, Greenberg said he was honored to be considered but remains committed to the Tigers and what the organization is building.
That commitment comes as Detroit works through a challenging season. The Tigers entered Monday 65-78 and in fourth place in the American League Central after reaching the postseason in each of the previous two seasons.
Detroit’s front office also made a major move at the trade deadline by sending ace Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers, further emphasizing the organization’s focus on its longer-term direction.

Greenberg’s decision is also notable because the Tigers and Red Wings share ownership under Christopher Ilitch. The Red Wings have been searching for a replacement since Steve Yzerman stepped down as general manager in July to move into a senior advisory role.
For the Tigers, however, Greenberg’s decision provides stability in the front office. The organization can now continue building around its young core without the uncertainty of losing a key executive.
The Red Wings will have to look elsewhere for their next hockey operations leader. Greenberg, meanwhile, will remain focused on helping the Tigers navigate their next phase.
