As the Oklahoma City Thunder prepare for their matchup against the Chicago Bulls, injuries are creating uncertainty around the lineup. Holding the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference, the Thunder have been dominant over the past two seasons, fueled by strong play from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and Isaiah Hartenstein.
Contributions from Jalen Williams, Ajay Mitchell, and others have highlighted the team’s depth, giving Oklahoma City one of the league's strongest benches. However, Holmgren’s recent performance raised some concerns after he finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and shot 42.9% from the field against the Boston Celtics.
It remains unclear if he was dealing with a hip issue during that game, but he has since been ruled out against the Bulls game with a hip injury (h/t Rylan Stiles of the Locked On Thunder podcast). His absence could impact both the team’s interior defense and offensive versatility.
This could present a challenge for Oklahoma City, as Holmgren has been a key piece of the rotation as the team’s starting center, sharing minutes with Isaiah Hartenstein.
Holmgren has put together an impressive season, averaging 17.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists while shooting 55.2% from the field and 35.3% from three-point range across 63 games. Holmgren’s impact goes beyond the box score, as he provides elite rim protection, excellent shot-blocking timing, and rare mobility for a 7-foot-1 big man.
His ability to alter shots and switch defensively makes him a critical part of the Thunder’s defensive identity.
Without him, Oklahoma City could see a drop-off in interior defense and overall versatility. If the injury lingers, it may force the team to rely more heavily on its depth, which could test consistency on both ends of the floor.

A former Gonzaga standout and the No. 2 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, Holmgren has developed into one of the league’s premier centers. He played a key role in Oklahoma City’s 2024-25 championship run, earning All-Star honors and All-Rookie recognition early in his career.
On July 9, 2025, he signed a five-year, fully guaranteed maximum rookie extension worth up to $250 million, beginning in the 2026-27 season and running through 2030-31.
The deal underscores the Thunder’s commitment to building around him as a cornerstone of the franchise. However, with the postseason approaching, his health becomes increasingly critical. Any lingering injury could impact Oklahoma City’s ability to compete at a high level in the playoffs.
