Professional athletes experience trades differently, but Oklahoma City Thunder guard Jared McCain has found an unusual way to share some of the most personal moments of his basketball career.
McCain entered the NBA with a considerable social media following, building an audience through basketball content, dancing and videos that allowed fans to see his personality away from the court.
That following has continued to grow throughout his professional career.
When Philadelphia traded McCain to Oklahoma City in February, the young guard faced an unexpected challenge: leaving the organization where his NBA journey began and adjusting to an entirely new environment.
Rather than releasing a conventional statement or simply posting a photograph in his new uniform, McCain turned to a platform that had become an important part of his public identity.
TikTok.
His response offered fans an emotional glimpse into what changing teams can mean for a young professional athlete.

McCain Used Music To Say Goodbye To Philadelphia
According to an ESPN feature examining McCain’s relationship with social media, the guard’s first public response to his trade came through a TikTok video. McCain shared a tribute to Philadelphia using a portion of Olivia Dean’s song “A Couple Minutes.”
The choice showed the personal nature of his departure.
Philadelphia was where McCain began his professional career after being selected in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft. He had established relationships with teammates, coaches and fans before learning that his career would continue in Oklahoma City.
For many players, being traded is simply part of the business. But McCain’s response demonstrated that those transactions can carry considerable emotional weight, particularly for younger athletes still establishing themselves in the league.
An Unexpected Video Marked His Oklahoma City Arrival
McCain’s next TikTok post marked the beginning of his Thunder career. Wearing an Oklahoma City shirt, he danced inside his hotel room while expressing the uncertainty that comes with searching for a new home.
The video attracted more than two million likes, according to ESPN. It was an extraordinary response to a moment that might otherwise have been treated as routine NBA transaction news.
McCain later discussed the unusual connection between his social media audience and his basketball career. Before the trade, some of his followers had even suggested that he should play for Oklahoma City.
Eventually, that hypothetical possibility became reality.
Thunder Guard Faces A Different Challenge
McCain now enters the 2026-27 season with an opportunity to establish a larger role within Oklahoma City’s rotation. The Thunder have developed into one of the Western Conference’s strongest organizations, giving McCain an opportunity to learn from accomplished teammates while continuing his development.
His experience also illustrates how younger NBA players are changing the relationship between athletes and fans. Social media can create challenges, but McCain has used it to express emotions that professional athletes have traditionally kept private.
For Thunder supporters, that openness offers an opportunity to understand the person behind the basketball player. McCain’s journey to Oklahoma City began with uncertainty and an emotional goodbye.
Now, he has an opportunity to turn that unexpected change into the next successful chapter of his career.
