The Pittsburgh Steelers returned to the field for the second day of training camp on Thursday. Day one featured several standout moments, and Thursday provided more opportunities for players to build on that momentum. A few storylines carried over into the second practice, including one key position battle that fans are closely watching.

There is still plenty of time for the roster to take shape as position battles continue and starting jobs remain up for grabs. The preseason will only raise the stakes. Whether it's the quarterback competition between Mason Rudolph and Will Howard or another battle elsewhere on the roster, plenty remains to unfold. Here are three developments that gained momentum on Thursday.

Mason Rudolph heating up

While Howard has emerged as the fan favorite and appeared poised to claim the QB2 job, one familiar name has been overlooked. Rudolph is reminding everyone why the Steelers brought him back. He's not a long-term starter, but he has proven he can provide steady play during the regular season and brings valuable postseason experience.

Rudolph turned in another strong practice on Thursday and is beginning to separate himself in training camp. However, these early drills are only part of the evaluation. The pads will come on soon, competition will intensify, and before long, the preseason will provide the next major test in the backup quarterback battle.

Aaron Rodgers connecting with Pat Freiermuth

On the first day of camp, Rodgers connected with Freiermuth on a quick hot route. On Thursday, that chemistry took another step forward. If there's a player poised for a bounce-back season, it's the sixth-year Penn State product. McCarthy's offense could help unlock that potential.

Freiermuth hauled in a tight-window throw from Rodgers that ranked among the best plays of the day. The pass came from roughly 20 yards away and energized the crowd. Rodgers still has plenty of zip on his throws to thread the needle, and Freiermuth remains a reliable target capable of capitalizing on those opportunities down the seam. Steelers fans caught a glimpse of that chemistry last season in Cincinnati.

McCarthy the mad scientist

McCarthy spoke with the media before practice and explained that there is a science behind the team's tempo. The urgency, practice plan, and every detail are carefully calculated by McCarthy, almost like a mad scientist. It's one of the reasons his offenses have enjoyed sustained success throughout his NFL coaching career. He has also introduced a custom set of philosophical pillars for the Steelers.

McCarthy told the media the team's foundation is built around the "Steelers Six" pillars of fundamentals:

Tackling and breaking tackles
Ball security
Blocking
Big plays
Finish and pursuit
Mannerisms
