The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off a disappointing 6-9 campaign and took CB Mansoor Delane in the first round, after trading up to the No. 6 selection. He's nursing a shoulder injury and has yet to shed the non-contact jersey in practice. The Chiefs took seven players in all in the draft, but it wasn't necessarily those that were drafted that are shining in camp.
Peter Woods
The second of the Chiefs' first-round picks, Woods caught veteran DT Chris Jones' eye in the very first week of camp. "I'm excited about the young talent we have on the D-line, man," Jones said. "A lot of explosiveness. Peter is coming along. We haven't put the pads on yet, so I'm excited to put the pads on Monday and see where we stand."
In the first day of pads, Woods flashed again, winning one-on-one matchups against the likes of two-time Pro Bowler OG Trey Smith. Woods used his quickness to push Smith back by gaining leverage using his right hand. Woods has been impressive in creating havoc for running backs by bursting through the offensive line quickly after the snap. That kind of burst will only open more lanes for Jones to rush the passer.
"I've liked what I've seen," head coach Andy Reid said of Woods. "He's an explosive kid, he's smart and he's learning, trying to hone in on some of the techniques we're asking him to do. I like his effort. He's got a ways to go, but you sure like the tools."
Kahlil Benson
The offensive tackle won a National Championship with the Indiana Hoosiers in 2025, but he went undrafted. No one picked him up in the UDFA signing period afterwards. The Chiefs invited him, along with 99 other players, to a rookie minicamp, and Benson flashed enough for the team to take a flyer.
Now, he could be leading the competition over OT Jaylon Moore for the starting right tackle spot. Benson has worked with the first-team offense the entire first week of padded practices. The kid is 6-foot-6 and 319 pounds and has been one of the biggest storylines in any training camp.
Cyrus Allen
The Chiefs took WR Cyrus Allen in the fifth round from Travis Kelce's alma mater Cincinnati. Allen flashed in his last collegiate season, leading the Big 12 with 13 touchdown receptions and caught 51 balls for 674 yards overall. He has had an enhanced look because WR Rashee Rice (knee) was eased into team activities following knee surgery.
The Kansas City Star's Pete Sweeney tweeted that Allen was QB Patrick Mahomes' favorite target, and it seems like he's looking his way each time he's out there. Allen had some bad luck, though, when he went down during a special teams drill and suffered a bruised shin last weekend. It cost him about four days of practice, but he returned to action Friday.
