Will Sophie Cunningham be in the WNBA in 2027?
The Indiana Fever guard has been one of the league’s best 3-point shooters off of the bench. However, as of late, the Fever are going to her less and less. Cunningham played just a few minutes in a blowout loss to Washington on Sunday, recording 0 points, 0 assists, 0 rebounds and 0 steals.
Cunningham, of course, has made headlines for more than just basketball. She publicly criticized transgender athletes participating in women’s sports in an ESPN feature. Cunningham’s comments sparked a ton of reaction, from both sides of the political aisle.
Is it possible that Cunningham could be out of the league altogether by 2027?

WNBA analyst Robin Lundberg believes it’s possible.
“If I had to predict, Sophie Cunningham is not on the Indiana Fever next year. And there’s a chance she is not in the league next year,” Lundberg said after Sunday’s game.
“Sophie has been a really good shooter. She’s been a productive player. She’s been a good player. But when you indicate practices are too tough, and then you play seven minutes the next game, people are gonna go, ‘hmm.’ The coach calls out the defense and the rebounding, that’s something you gotta look in the mirror about,” he added.
Cunningham won’t be hurting if she leaves WNBA, though
Cunningham launched a new podcast with basketball trainer Drew Hanlen. She’s been making appearances at various events, including a UFC fight.
“She’s laying the groundwork for her post playing career now on the podcast. Obviously, she’s extraordinarily popular, and she’s really good at it, giving her unfiltered take, she’s really good at it. No team wants to constantly be talking about what one of the players said. Especially, when it is a role player,” Lundberg said.
