The 2026 fantasy football sleeper running backs offer draft-day upside for managers searching for emerging roles, overlooked volume, and paths to starting-caliber production. Identifying the best fantasy football RB sleepers requires weighing backfield competition, receiving work, goal-line opportunities, offensive line play, and injury contingency value, among other factors.

Some backs can exceed expectations and develop into dependable weekly starters, while others provide matchup value, streaming appeal, or best-ball upside during the upcoming NFL season.

2026 Fantasy Football Sleeper RBs

Jonathon Brooks, Carolina Panthers

After missing the entire 2025 season, Brooks reached another milestone by starting Carolina’s preseason opener on Aug. 15 while Chuba Hubbard recovered from a hamstring injury. Brooks managed only five yards on three carries and caught one pass for nine yards, but completing his first game action since suffering a second ACL tear was encouraging on its own. Hubbard remains week-to-week, although Carolina expects him to return for Week 1, leaving Brooks with valuable first-team opportunities in the meantime. The Panthers already planned to work Brooks with the primary offense before Hubbard went down, and he will now share those opportunities with Trevor Etienne. Brooks still presents substantial risk after multiple knee reconstructions, but his youth, versatility, and collegiate production give him worthy upside. He’s going as PPR RB33, so most gamers are onto this sleeper candidate, but he still can threaten RB2 territory if Hubbard misses extended time.

Emmett Johnson, Kansas City Chiefs

Johnson enters his rookie season behind Kenneth Walker III and veteran Emari Demercado on Kansas City’s initial depth chart. The fifth-round pick still has a path to the No. 2 role, although he will need to overtake Demercado while also holding off Brashard Smith. The fifth-round pick brings strong receiving ability, totaling 1,451 rushing yards, 370 receiving yards, and 15 touchdowns at Nebraska, along with 46 catches. Andy Reid has praised Johnson’s versatility and hands, suggesting early involvement. Johnson carried that momentum into the preseason opener, rushing 12 times for 59 yards and adding three receptions while also having a touchdown erased by a penalty. Reid praised his physical running and yards after contact afterward, giving Johnson an early edge in the competition for complementary touches.

MarShawn Lloyd and Chris Brooks, Green Bay Packers

The Josh Jacobs situation has become considerably more important to this sleeper case. Brown County prosecutors formally charged Jacobs on Aug. 27 with misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor criminal damage to property stemming from his May arrest. The NFL continues to review the case, and no suspension has been announced, but general manager Brian Gutekunst said on Aug. 26 that Green Bay has prepared for the possibility of Jacobs missing games. Lloyd already handled extensive first-team work during Jacobs’ groin absence, while Brooks remains another potential beneficiary for PPR formats, making both considerably more appealing late-round contingency picks than they were earlier in the summer.

Mike Washington Jr., Las Vegas Raiders

Washington’s sleeper case received a major boost when Ashton Jeanty suffered an ankle sprain on Aug. 23 that has put his Week 1 availability in question. The injury is not expected to be long term, but Washington has since taken exclusive first-team reps and would be positioned to lead Las Vegas’ backfield if Jeanty misses time. At 6-foot-2, 228 pounds with 4.33 speed, the fourth-round rookie brings an unusual combination of size and wheels after rushing for 1,070 yards at 6.4 yards per carry during his final season at Arkansas. Jeanty remains the unquestioned starter once healthy, but Washington now has a legitimate path to opening the season with substantial volume and would carry RB2 upside in any games Jeanty misses. His current PPR RB50 ADP still makes him an inexpensive handcuff with considerably more immediate value than he offered a week ago.

Jonah Coleman, Denver Broncos

Denver invested a fourth-round pick in Coleman, who has quickly impressed Sean Payton with his physical running, short-area quickness, and ability to contribute on third down. The 5-foot-8, 220-pound rookie remains behind J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey, but he has played well enough throughout camp to establish himself in the Broncos’ backfield rotation. Payton has repeatedly praised how quickly Coleman has adjusted to the NFL, an encouraging development for a player with three-down versatility. Immediate volume may be difficult to find, but Dobbins’ injury history creates an obvious on-ramp for considerably more work. Coleman is inexpensive at PPR RB52 and offers appealing contingency upside in deeper drafts.

Demond Claiborne, Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota selected Claiborne in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft after he led Wake Forest in rushing for three consecutive seasons. His excellent speed and open-field ability give the Vikings a developmental option behind Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason, while veteran Zavier Scott also currently sits ahead of the rookie on Minnesota’s initial depth chart. Claiborne received an extended look in Minnesota’s preseason opener, leading the team with 12 carries for an underwhelming 34 yards and giving the rookie an opportunity to continue pressing Scott for the No. 3 role. A very deep sleeper, Claiborne can earn touches in this productive offensive system via injuries or decline in production ahead of him. For now, he’s no better than a lotto ticket at the end of deep best-ball drafts.
