After years of trying to crack the code, the NFL has ultimately decided to get rid of the Pro Bowl.

The Pro Bowl was simply designed to let the NFL’s best players compete in a fun exhibition game. While it got the job done for years, it started to become an uncompetiive mess in the 2010s. The league tried to revamp its All-Star event by turning it into the “Pro Bowl Games,” which featured a few skills challenges and a flag football game.

Although there has been some version of the Pro Bowl since 1951, the NFL agreed on Wednesday that its All-Star festivities are being eliminated

Peter O’Reilly, the NFL’s executive vice president of club business, international and league events, spoke to Jonathan Jones of The Athletic about this decision.

“All-star games, I think, for all leagues have been fraught for a long time, and they haven’t necessarily represented the very best premium of that sport for those players. I think all leagues have struggled with that. We made the switch four years ago from the ‘tackle’ Pro Bowl to the flag game, and that was more strategic for us. In many ways, we saw a decrease in the replacement players,” O’Reilly told The Athletic. “But ultimately, the Pro Bowl, at its core, is about honoring the best of the best in that season, on the field, in real games. And the shift here is about shifting the focus from the game — which is ultimately where people’s attention goes, especially the replacement players tied to it — to the honor.”

The right decision for the NFL?

Judging by the initial reactions online, NFL fans are on board with the Pro Bowl being abolished.

“No Pro Bowl games is fine. Every league is struggling to come up with an answer for these All-Star games,” one person commented. “The no alternate thing is the most impactful thing of all. I’m happy with both.”

“Love this change honestly! Only 88 players will earn Pro Bowl honors each season, and with no alternates the selection will carry much more weight,” another person wrote.

“NFL should do this retroactively from. Record keeping standpoint so there’s uniformity across eras Put all replacement Pro Bowl honors in a separate bucket,” another person suggested.

Only time will tell if NFL fans end up missing the Pro Bowl. For now though, it sounds like they’ll be fine without it.
