The team most notorious for ruining the careers of quarterbacks they draft may have identified their next quarterback to ruin.
According to ESPN NFL insider Field Yates via Adam Schefter, the New York Jets have scheduled a private workout with Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson.
"Alabama QB Ty Simpson is scheduled to hold a private workout this Friday with the Jets, per @FieldYates. The Jets own picks No. 2 and No. 16 in this year’s first round," Schefter wrote.
Simpson had one season as a starter for the Crimson Tide, going 11-4 overall while completing 64.5-percent of his passes for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns with just five interceptions. He led the Crimson Tide to the SEC Championship Game and earned Second-Team All-SEC honors this past season.
By most analysts and scouts, Simpson is the second-best QB prospect in the 2026 NFL Draft after consensus No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza. But he's a distant second to most (Dan Orlovsky being a noteworthy exception) and many have him falling outside of the first round entirely next month.

Simpson & the Jets
While Simpson would probably be happy to be drafted by any team, his early career is simply doomed if he gets drafted by the Jets. Over the past couple of decades, no team has gotten less out of more quarterbacks than them.
Some quarterbacks are terrible from the get-go and never improve like Mark Sanchez or Zach Wilson. Some need five to 10 years to hit their stride like Sam Darnold and Geno Smith. And some simply never play at all like Christian Hackenberg or James Morgan.
Simply put, if Ty Simpson winds up getting drafted by the Jets he'd better prepare for years of pain and suffering because there's no reason to believe he'll get anything positive.
But the Jets have a whopping four draft picks in the top-50 of the 2026 NFL Draft. There will probably be plenty of opportunities for them to do it.
