The Houston Texans had finally started to turn their season around with wins over the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars. Those victories pushed them up several national power rankings and revived hopes of a playoff push. But the 27–21 overtime loss to the New York Giants exposed the same problems that plagued Houston earlier in the season, especially a defense that struggled to make stops when it mattered.
Houston entered Week 7 with growing optimism, but the Giants loss brought the Texans back to 2–5. The defense surrendered 420 yards, while the offense managed just 237. Several outlets have now moved Houston down their lists, questioning whether the team can recover during its bye week. Here is the team’s ranking after week 7.

What Do Experts Say About the Texans?
“The Texans didn’t have many big offseason acquisitions, but Moreau has provided help in the run game. And he has been a good red zone threat with three total touchdowns. Moreau has played 43% of the snaps, eating into the playing time of tight end Dalton Schultz, who is down from 70% in 2025 to 57% this season. Moreau helps Houston’s offense not be predictable when he’s in the game. Even though Houston has just two wins, its offense is averaging 24 points per game. And Moreau is a noteworthy part of the unit,” DJ Bien-Aime, ESPN.
“The Houston offense took a step backward in Week 7, as C.J. Stroud failed to throw for 200 yards for the first time in almost a month. Nico Collins was never able to get going in the loss, only catching two passes for six yards in the loss,” Mike Johrendt, ClutchPoints.
“Back-to-back wins briefly revived Houston’s season. Sunday’s loss exposed how much work remains. There are a number of reasons why the Texans have struggled, but the most surprising has to be the team’s defensive collapse. Last year, Houston led the league in total defense and ranked first in the AFC in scoring defense. This season, Houston’s defense has been average—on a good day. The Texans allowed 420 yards of offense in Sunday’s overtime loss, including 188 yards and four scores on the ground.
The offense isn’t without blame—taking on a Giants team short its best edge-rusher and green-dot linebacker, Houston had just 237 yards of offense and was 3-for-12 on third down. The Texans head into their bye week facing an unpleasant reality: There will be no return to the playoffs in 2026,” Gary Davenport, Bleacher Report.
“The Texans are undoubtedly a much-improved team over the past three weeks and can take comfort in that as they head into their bye week. But here’s their reality: It was always going to be tough, if not impossible, to rebound from a 0-4 start. The upstart Giants showed them how hard on Sunday by running all over them. The loss was bad enough, but giving up 420 yards to a Giants team starting its third QB this season? This Texans’ defense just hasn’t been good enough and now the club is operating the rest of the season with almost no margin for error,” Ralph Vacchiano, FOX Sports.
Houston’s Playoff Hopes Are Fading as the Bye Week Arrives

At 2–5, the Texans face a steep climb back into the playoff picture. Their two-game winning streak briefly raised hopes, but the overtime loss showed that the defense remains a major concern. Houston needs to tackle better, limit explosive plays and help C.J. Stroud by keeping the offense on schedule. The bye week is an important chance for DeMeco Ryans and his staff to address those issues.
Stroud and the passing game have shown flashes over the past few weeks, but the team cannot keep asking the offense to rescue it. Head Coach DeMeco Ryans needs to find answers for missed tackles and late-game breakdowns. The Texans return against the Chargers on November 8, and that matchup will offer an early test of whether the bye-week work has made a difference.
