The 2026 NFL season has gotten off to a horrible start for the Houston Texans. Sitting at 0-4, the Texans are in desperate need of a win.
In Week 5, they face the Tennessee Titans. If they lose this game, their season would likely already be over. A win doesn't get them back on track, though it would have them heading in the right direction to salvage their season.
With the season seemingly on the line, DeMeco Ryans made a big announcement. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Ryans has taken over play-calling duties for the defense, signaling desperation time for the 0-4 Texans.
DeMeco Ryans takes over as play-caller for struggling Texans
"Texans HC DeMeco Ryans said he will take over defensive play-calling duties," Schefter reported Wednesday afternoon.
Matt Burke, calling plays for this elite Texans defense through the first four weeks of the season, clearly wasn't doing a good-enough job.
He's lost the play-calling responsibility for the defense, and Ryans, the defensive-minded head coach, is the one taking over for a struggling Texans team.

One of the reasons for their early-season woes is the defense. C.J. Stroud has actually looked the part of a quality starting QB. This defense, on the other hand, has not.
Despite having some incredible talent on this defense, headlined by Will Anderson Jr., the Texans haven't been able to win a game this season.
They've flashed their potential at times this season, and their 2025 production shows how good things can get. But after a 0-4 start, it's desperation time for the Texans, as Ryans is taking over play-calling duties after just four weeks.
