The Tennessee Volunteers are trying to keep pace on the recruiting trail. So far, Josh Heupel and his staff have landed nine commitments in the 2027 cycle, ranking 12th in the SEC and 29th in the nation, according to Rivals.

They're looking to make some improvements after putting together a top 15 class every year from 2022 to 2026. One of Tennessee's most intriguing targets is wide receiver Eric McFarland.

He currently has offers from the Texas A&M Aggies, Ohio State Buckeyes, Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes and USC Trojans, making this a high-powered battle.

However, according to Rivals' Steve Wiltfong, the Volunteers have emerged as a suitor after hosting McFarland for their annual recruiting event, 865 Live, over the weekend.

"Tennessee hosted five-star receiver Eric McFarland III for 865 Live over the weekend, and the Vols become one of Texas A&M’s biggest challengers moving forward," Wiltfong wrote.

Landing the pass catcher won't be easy. Rivals Industry Rankings list him as a five-star recruit, the No. 6 wide receiver, the No. 5 player in Nevada and the No. 26 player in the nation.

Originally a member of the 2028 cycle, McFarland reclassified to enter college a year early. He's coming off a solid 2025-26 season at IMG Academy, accumulating 29 receptions for 595 yards and 11 touchdowns. He earned first-team honors on the MaxPreps Sophomore All-America Team.

While Texas A&M has a strong lead in this recruiting battle, with an 88.5% chance of landing his commitment according to the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine, Tennessee is making it a battle.

If the Volunteers can pull it off, McFarland would be the second wide receiver Heupel lands, alongside four-star Kesean Bowman.
