Locked On Bucs host James Yarcho’s prescription is straightforward: Stop asking Mayfield to live on deep shots and get the ball quickly to wide receivers Chris Godwin Jr. and Emeka Egbuka, then let the playmakers create after the catch. That would give Tampa Bay a needed offensive identity after a start defined by turnovers, stalled red-zone possessions, and untimely negative plays.
Mayfield’s Week 1 fumbles helped swing the opener in Cincinnati, where Tampa Bay lost four fumbles in a 33-27 defeat. He then completed 21 of 34 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown against the Browns, but the Bucs scored only one touchdown and failed to convert a final opportunity near the goal line. To be fair, there was also a long weather delay.
Yarcho said the offense has lacked an intermediate layer, too often operating either near the line of scrimmage or on throws 25 yards downfield. That makes the matchup especially difficult against Minnesota defensive coordinator Brian Flores, whose defense has blitzed at an extraordinary rate through two games, according to Locked On Vikings host Luke Braun.
Braun said every Tampa Bay concept needs a built-in pressure answer, but he also cautioned that Flores wants offenses to settle for short hot reads. Minnesota’s defensive backs can trigger downhill on those throws, placing the burden on Godwin Jr., Egbuka, and the rest of the receiving group to win tackles and turn routine completions into productive gains.
The Bucs have shown they can move the ball when Mayfield stays in rhythm. Godwin Jr. produced a 24-yard catch on Tampa Bay’s lone touchdown drive against Cleveland, while Egbuka finished that possession with a five-yard scoring reception. The problem has been sustaining that efficiency once penalties, pressure, or long-yardage situations disrupt the script.
Minnesota quarterback Kyler Murray will return after clearing concussion protocol, increasing the urgency for Tampa Bay to avoid another slow start. The Bucs do not need Mayfield to chase a shootout; they need him to protect the football, identify the blitz pre-snap, and repeatedly put their best receivers in space.
A win would not erase Tampa Bay’s early problems, but it would keep the Bucs within reach of .500 heading into the rest of the early-season schedule. Another turnover-heavy or disjointed performance would sharpen the pressure on an offense that has yet to play a complete game.
