Stephen A. Smith believes the NBA would be in serious trouble if a LeBron James and Stephen Curry pairing with the Golden State Warriors becomes reality.
The possibility grew likely after James officially hit free agency. Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul informed the Los Angeles Lakers that James will continue his legendary career next season but will play elsewhere.
Smith is among those hyping the prospect of James teaming up with his close friend in the Bay Area.
Speaking on "The Stephen A. Smith Show," the ESPN analyst declared the basketball world may be witnessing the birth of another superteam.
"But I'm here to tell you right now, ladies and gentlemen, LeBron and Steph Curry together in Golden State, if that happens, ladies and gentlemen, that's the Beatles and the Heatles all over again," he said.
Smith made sure fans did not sleep on what both players still bring to the floor at this stage of their careers.
"I will remind you that the great Steph Curry, the baby-faced assassin, the greatest shooter God has ever created, that dude is still a superstar in this game," he added. "Ladies and gentlemen, LeBron James joined Steph Curry. Lord have mercy."
Reports suggest the Warriors are serious about making this happen. Per NBA insider Shams Charania, Golden State is pursuing James in free agency. They are also targeting former Lakers teammate Anthony Davis via trade from the Washington Wizards.
Draymond Green even declined his $27.6 million player option to create the financial flexibility needed.
To land Davis, Golden State would likely need to includeJimmy Butler in the deal. He holds an expiring $57 million contract while recovering from a torn ACL.
The scenario is not far-fetched given the friendship James and Curry share. The two linked up for Team USA's gold medal run at the 2024 Paris Olympics. It gave the basketball world a preview of what their pairing could look like.
Smith clearly liked what he saw. If it comes together, the league has been warned.
