Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White discussed how she navigates her tough job.
Ahead of their fourth consecutive road game against the New York Liberty on Saturday, coach White has described her perspective as the team’s lead tactician.
She talked about how similar her situation is to her players, while also highlighting the support she receives from them.
“The reality is just like players: there are some days where it’s like you just don’t have it,” White said. “Like, you just don’t have it. Like, life happens. On those days, I can go to them, and I can say, ‘Y’all, I need you today.’
“And I think when you learn in life as we get older, we learn different things that we’re not always leading from the front. This is one thing we talked about with our team all the time.”
The 2023 WNBA Coach of the Year also expressed her appreciation for how her team boosts her morale whenever she feels down.
“Sometimes you need somebody to lift you up,” White continued. “Sometimes you need to lift somebody else up. I think that this season in particular, I’ve really tried to live the message that I try to talk about. [I] lean into the privilege that I have regardless of the circumstance, and I’m just thankful for the village and these players.”
White also gave credit to her players for sticking together and remaining locked in throughout the season despite the ups and downs.
“I mean, look, these players are really incredible, like the way that they’re able to minimize the outside noise,” White stated. “The way they’re able to show up for each other and for me every day, [and] they lift me up. I’m just really thankful for the group that I’m surrounded by on a day-to-day basis, and it helps.”
White and the Fever will end their five-game road trip on Sunday when they visit the Chicago Sky at Wintrust Arena. They are looking to secure their first win in three games.
