The Indiana Fever received unfortunate news as Damiris Dantas has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Head coach Stephanie White addressed the news on Monday during a media session. The 10-year WNBA veteran underwent a successful knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus in her left knee. The news came following the Fever’s loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday.
Dantas has played in 12 games this season for Indiana. She averaged 3.3 points and 1.5 rebounds in only 8.2 minutes per game.
Coach White talked about the impact of the 6-foot-4 center on the squad.
“We’ll miss her in the locker room,” White said. “She’s a connector. Her personality and she’s a great communicator.
“She’s a vet. (We’ll) miss her ability to stretch the floor. On the floor, she can knock down the shot. She can give us a different look from that position as well.”
Dantas is now in her third season with the Fever. She was part of the lineup when Indiana won the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup last season.
The 33-year-old Brazilian national last played on July 17, when the Fever faced the Seattle Storm. Coach White noted that there is currently no timetable as to when Dantas will rejoin the squad.
“I’m not sure," said the Fever coach. "I think it will probably depend on her what recovery looks like.”
Indiana has had its fair share of injuries this season. Despite that, they’re still sitting at the number five spot in the WNBA standings with a 19-11 record.
The Fever will host the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday as the home team looks to bounce back from its recent loss.
