Stephen Curry is staying put.
On Friday evening, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Golden State Warriors signed Curry to a two-year, $116 million extension that includes a player option for the 2027-28 season. The 12-time All-Star point guard, who was on an expiring $62.6 million contract, had been eligible for an extension of up to two years and $136.7 million since Aug. 29.
Golden State presented Curry with several contract options in recent weeks, according to ESPN, including max deals, discounted salaries for team-building upside and waiting until the season or offseason. Ultimately, Curry took $20.7 million less than his maximum salary, accepting a deal that now gives the Warriors significant cap space next summer.
Curry, who turns 39 next March, is entering his 18th season in the NBA. He has spent his entire career with the Warriors, winning four championships and earning two MVP awards. Had an extension not been reached, he would have become a free agent next summer, opening the door for speculation about his future.
Widely regarded as the greatest shooter in NBA history, Curry is coming off a season in which he averaged 26.6 points and 4.7 assists over 43 games. The star point guard missed more than two months due to persistent right knee issues, which remain an ongoing concern.
The Warriors went 37-45 and fell just short in the Play-In Tournament last year, missing the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. They are entering the 2026-27 campaign with a very similar roster after a quiet offseason, surrounding Curry with a veteran-heavy supporting cast that includes Draymond Green, Jimmy Butler and Kristaps Porzingis.
“We couldn’t be more excited about reaching an agreement with Stephen and extending his historic career with the Warriors,” Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy said in a statement. “He embodies everything this organization strives to represent through his legendary play on the court, his unique leadership and sacrifice, and his unmatched impact in the community. We’ve been incredibly blessed to experience 17 years of Stephen’s artistry and are thrilled that our fans will continue to have the opportunity to watch him perform and write additional chapters to his illustrious story.”
Curry’s extension brings his career on-court earnings to $652 million, making him the first player to eclipse $600 million in NBA history.
