The Pittsburgh Steelers entered training camp believing they had assembled one of the NFL's most talented wide receiver groups.
After acquiring DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr., the organization gave future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers an impressive collection of proven playmakers to work with as Pittsburgh prepares for what it hopes will be a deep postseason run in 2026.
Building chemistry between Rodgers and his new receivers has been one of the biggest priorities throughout camp, making every practice valuable as the offense continues to come together. That made Tuesday's update from Rodgers particularly noteworthy. Speaking with reporters, the veteran quarterback revealed that both Metcalf and Pittman are currently dealing with injuries.
While Rodgers did not suggest either issue is expected to become a long-term concern, the news comes at an important stage of training camp as the Steelers continue preparing for preseason action and the start of the regular season.
Aaron Rodgers Shares Injury Update on DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr.
Rodgers acknowledged Tuesday that both veteran receivers are currently sidelined.
"DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. injuries have been tough," Rodgers said while discussing Pittsburgh's offense during training camp.
Although he didn't elaborate on the severity of either injury, Rodgers quickly turned the conversation toward the players who have stepped into larger roles while the two veterans recover.
He specifically mentioned rookie Germie Bernard and wide receiver Brandon Smith as players who have made the most of the additional practice reps.
Rodgers was especially complimentary of Smith.
The veteran quarterback noted that Smith is in much better shape than he was when the two previously spent time together with the New York Jets, adding that the improvement has been evident throughout Steelers training camp.
His comments reflected confidence in Pittsburgh's receiving depth, even with two projected starters temporarily unavailable.
Steelers' Young Receivers Are Making the Most of Their Opportunity
Training camp injuries are never ideal, but they often create opportunities for younger players to accelerate their development.
That appears to be happening in Pittsburgh.
With Metcalf and Pittman both missing practice time, Bernard, Brandon Smith and several other receivers have seen increased opportunities to work alongside Rodgers with the first-team offense. Those extra reps could become valuable as the Steelers continue evaluating their depth chart ahead of the preseason opener.
The Steelers still expect Metcalf and Pittman to be central pieces of the offense once the regular season begins. Both receivers were brought in to give Rodgers experienced targets capable of stretching the field and making contested catches.
For now, however, the focus is on getting both veterans healthy while allowing younger receivers to prove they deserve meaningful roles.
Rodgers' update wasn't the type of news Steelers fans wanted to hear, but there also wasn't any indication that either injury is expected to significantly alter Pittsburgh's plans entering the 2026 season.
Instead, Tuesday served as another reminder that training camp is as much about developing depth as it is preparing the stars for Week 1.
