The 2026 quarterback class lacks top-tier depth. While Indiana Hoosiers' Fernando Mendoza and Alabama Crimson Tide's Ty Simpson are the clear front-runners, scouts are circling Day 2 and early Day 3 for high-upside rebound candidates like LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier.
He was once considered a potential first-round pick. However, injuries slowed his final college seasons and dipped his draft stock a lot, leading to concerns about his long-term potential and performance consistency.
So, now, Nussmeier is projected as a mid-round rebound candidate, likely coming off the board on Day 2 or early Day 3.
The 24-year-old was a Heisman candidate heading into 2025 after a strong 2024 campaign where he threw for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns.

But a lingering abdominal injury during fall camp derailed his senior season. He was limited to only nine games and managed 1,927 yards and 12 touchdowns with a 67.4% completion rate before being sidelined following the Alabama game. Over five seasons at LSU, he finished with 7,699 yards and 52 touchdowns.
He stabilized his draft stock by winning Senior Bowl MVP and showing improved arm strength at his Pro Day. Luke Easterling from Athlon Sports recently projected Nussmeier to Pittsburgh in the third round.
Many analysts link the Louisiana native to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round. Just to recap, new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy worked closely with Garrett’s father for three years as his quarterbacks coach with the Dallas Cowboys.
Experts such as ESPN's Ben Solak suggested that this familiarity with the Nussmeier DNA makes the young signal-caller an ideal fit for McCarthy’s scheme.
With 12 picks this year, Pittsburgh has the capital to take a chance on a quarterback. Since Aaron Rodgers, 42, has not made any decision about his 2026 return, sixth-rounder Will Howard is the primary young signal-caller on the roster right now. So, Nussmeier can be a very safe and long-term plan for them, considering his breakout performance in 2024.
PFF’s scouting reports highlight his strong pocket management and an 89.5 passing grade on throws over the middle. While some evaluators label him a reliable backup, he has the physical tools to develop into a starter in the right system.
By snagging him on Day 2, the Steelers gain a developmental signal-caller with NFL bloodlines at a bargain price, significantly lower cost than a first-round selection.
