The Pittsburgh Steelers have found a knack under general manager Omar Khan for uncovering NFL Draft gems on Day 3. Whether it’s Mason McCormick or Nick Herbig, Khan has built a growing list of productive fourth-round picks. Former Ohio State standout Jack Sawyer could be the next player to join that group. Sawyer had a solid rookie season, including stepping into a larger role when injuries hit the Steelers’ edge group. He answered the call and continues to develop his game heading into his second season.
Cris Carter of the Locked On Steelers podcast highlighted Sawyer in his analysis of Friday night’s preseason contest. Sawyer made several plays that stood out to Carter, and his performance suggested he could become a frequent contributor in the Steelers’ edge rotation.
“Jack Sawyer I thought had a really good game and showed why he’s getting better and you know should be definitely part of the edge rotation … Three tackles, a sack, and a pass batted broken up when he kind of rushed through and batted down a screen pass.” Carter said.

Sawyer has the pedigree and the environment to develop into a regular starting edge defender. Coming from Ohio State, he entered the NFL with plenty of experience playing at a high level. Now he has the opportunity to learn from some of the Steelers’ best defensive players.
Becoming the next Watt or Highsmith is a lofty standard, but Sawyer has already shown an ability to make the type of splash plays that can define an edge rusher. The next step is consistency.
If Sawyer continues to develop his pass-rushing ability, continue to be a force against the run, and take advantage of his opportunities, the Steelers could eventually have another homegrown defensive playmaker on their hands.
