Steelers Insider Compares Germie Bernard to a Favorite Target of Aaron Rodgers

The NFL is a league built on comparisons, especially when rookies enter through the NFL Draft. The Pittsburgh Steelers have several rookies who drew comparisons leading up to the draft, and those evaluations have continued as the coaching staff looks for ways to maximize each player's strengths. One comparison involving second-round pick Germie Bernard might even bring a smile to Aaron Rodgers' face.

During an appearance on 93.7 The Fan, Ray Fittipaldo compared Bernard to one of Rodgers' most familiar targets: Randall Cobb.

“I think Bernard could end up having, like, a nice role as a contributor as a rookie,” Fittipaldo said. “I envision him as kind of like the next Randall Cobb. Randall Cobb wasn’t a prolific guy … but he was always there.”

Could Germie Bernard become the next Randall Cobb?

Cobb was the Green Bay Packers' second-round pick in 2011, the same round Bernard entered the league. Their scouting reports also share several similarities, particularly their ability to create separation and generate yards after the catch. Fittipaldo highlighted those same traits.

“He was the short, intermediate part of the field guy. Great run after the catch. And that’s exactly what you are gonna get,” Fittipaldo explained.

The similarities extend beyond their scouting reports. Bernard ran a 4.48-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, while Cobb posted a 4.55. Even so, Cobb often played faster than his timed speed suggested, as evidenced by his debut's 108-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Both players built their reputations on creating yards after the catch rather than simply outrunning defenders.

Bernard likely won't beat cornerbacks downfield the way Mike Wallace did during his prime. However, he has reliable hands and excels in the short and intermediate areas of the field, making him a dependable target who can consistently move the chains.

Rodgers may not see Bernard reach Cobb's level

Unfortunately for Bernard, he likely won't have the opportunity to become Rodgers' go-to receiver beyond this season. Rodgers has made it clear that this is his final year, his last dance. Still, Fittipaldo has previously speculated that Bernard's biggest contributions could come later in the season, giving him plenty of time to earn Rodgers' trust.

That timeline would mirror Cobb's rookie campaign, when his role and target share increased as the 2011 season progressed. Player comparisons often miss the mark once prospects reach the NFL. Some players exceed expectations, while others are out of the league within a few years. Even so, the Bernard-Cobb comparison stands out because of the striking similarities in their overall skill sets and projected roles.
