It’s been 40 years since Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy last played football and the 62-year-old coach hasn’t exactly stayed in playing shape since then. So it should be no surprise that he couldn’t exactly walk off an injury he suffered while walking the sidelines.

According to CBS via ProFootballTalk, McCarthy limped off the field of today’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and went into the medical tent. He reportedly received treatment during halftime for an injured ankle.

Fortunately, it doesn’t look like the injury was all that debilitating. He was back on the sidelines calling plays for the Steelers at the start of the second half.

It’s a frustrating start to the game.

McCarthy may be doing alright health-wise but the Steelers offense is struggling in a big way right now. Starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers barely has 100 passing yards through three quarters and has taken two sacks and thrown an interception.

The run game with Rico Dowdle and Jaylen Warren is getting a little movement but neither one of them has really been getting a ton of touches.

On top of the interception from Rodgers, the Steelers have had a turnover on downs and missed a field goal.

They might not be in the game at all if the defense wasn’t playing so well, but they’re still down 16-3 late in the third quarter.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (8) checks with head coach Mike McCarthy after calling a timeout in the fourth quarter of the NFL Week 3 game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati Bengals at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026. The Bengals fell to 2-1 on the season with a 30-27 loss on the road.

The Steelers made McCarthy their new head coach in no small part due to his ability to get the absolute best out of Rodgers during their decade-plus working together on the Green Bay Packers.

Thus far, their partnership has been a mixed bag. The Steelers were 3-2 heading into this game and without a big fourth quarter they’ll be back to .500 at the end of the day.
