Head coach Mike McCarthy faces a number of questions with his Pittsburgh Steelers in year one as the man in charge. Expectations are growing for the team not only to produce a more functional offense, but to take a step forward as a whole. After all, this team won the AFC North in 2025 and retained a lot of key contributors. They've also added a number of playmakers on both sides of the ball. McCarthy's homecoming season will put these changes and additions to the test in 2026.
September is only a couple months away now. In just a few weeks, the Steelers will report to Saint Vincent College's campus for training camp. Soon after, the preseason will ramp up the roster battles. Before you know it, the regular season will arrive. A first-place schedule means 2026 will bring a number of tough challenges for the Steelers. These challenges will test every change, talent acquisition, and philosophy the team has made. The only question is whether they'll survive these major tests.

Week 1 – Steelers vs. Falcons
Don't let the Atlanta Falcons' quarterback situation fool you. They boast elite skill players and an underrated offensive line. Even more so, they field a strong defense. To top it all off, head coach Kevin Stefanski, who knows a thing or two about facing the Steelers, leads them.
McCarthy will feel plenty of anticipation in the building for his first regular season game as head coach. If there's ever a game to win over skeptics, week one is it. It won't be easy, but this also marks only the second week-one home game the Steelers have played in the past 10 years.

Week 2 – Steelers at Patriots
The Steelers narrowly escaped Foxboro alive last year. The New England Patriots were the only playoff team they defeated in the regular season. While the Falcons game marks McCarthy's first official contest, this one will test the team's resilience early.
The Patriots enter as the defending AFC champions and now hold an experience advantage over the Steelers. Their offense has added new weapons, and their defense has grown even stronger. Pittsburgh's first two games will reveal a lot.

Week 10 – Steelers at Bengals
Plenty of tough matchups fill the schedule between weeks two and 10. But the second half of the season turns up the heat. A Sunday Night battle against the Cincinnati Bengals will be a tough one.
The Bengals have retooled their defense and still field one of the most lethal offenses in the NFL. If McCarthy and his staff want to prove they can win playoff football, it starts here.

Week 12 – Steelers vs. Broncos
The next two matchups will pose a monumental test for the offense, and especially the offensive line. The Denver Broncos field an unequivocal top-three defense in the NFL. Their defensive line hits ferociously, and their secondary can shut down many passing attacks.
The good news: the Steelers play at home. Still, this game continues the gauntlet of playoff-caliber tests, and it will be a brutal one.

Week 13 – Steelers vs. Texans
The second half of the schedule could turn into a very long stretch. Right after facing the Broncos, the Steelers immediately face the Houston Texans, another top-three defense, and one that crushed the Steelers with its defense alone last time out.
The offensive line will face a massive test from weeks 11 through 14, going up against perennial defensive lines packed with elite pass rushers. If the Steelers can escape that stretch at 2-2, it would count as masterful work by McCarthy.

Week 18 – Steelers at Ravens
A lot of factors will determine whether this game qualifies as a real test. If the Steelers fall out of playoff contention after that brutal second-half schedule, this game won't matter much. However, history shows that battles with the Baltimore Ravens usually carry the most at stake.
On the road in Baltimore, plenty could hang in the balance: a wild card berth, the AFC North title, or Ravens home-field advantage in the playoffs. The 2026 season might come down to one play in this game that decides a team's fate, much like it did last year.
