Dylan Harper is having a good rookie campaign for the San Antonio Spurs. The second overall pick is producing at a solid level for a rotation player in a stacked Spurs backcourt, with averages of 10.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 43 games off the bench.
However, his overall production is not the only reason Spurs fans are excited to see his development. He has showcased his explosive athleticism on the NBA hardwood multiple times this season, with his dunk over Utah Jazz big man Kyle Filipowski being a particular highlight.
With the dunk contest being a lowlight in this year's All-Star Weekend festivities, fans are looking for exciting players who could make the contest interesting again. And it may seem like Harper put his name in the bag of potential contenders for the league's best dunker.
Dylan Harper Expresses Interest in Competing in 2027 Slam Dunk Contest
Harper, alongside family members Ron Sr. and Ron Jr., appeared on the "Cousins" podcast hosted by Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter. One of the topics they talked about how the younger Harpers were constantly getting on their dad. One example of this was how they joked that their dad couldn't jump high during his athletic peak.
Ron Harper Sr. immediately claimed that he participated in two dunk contests. Dylan Harper immediately chimed in with a jab that backfired on him.
"I can do every dunk you did in that dunk contest," he said. McGrady and Carter, both electrifying dunkers during their time, immediately asked him why he didn't sign up for the competition.
He tried backpedalling before making a teasing statement that would have the organizers for next year's All-Star weekend interested.
"I don't got that many tricks," he said. "We could see in like a year, we'll see next year. We'll talk."
Given his athleticism and his father's experience, the 19-year-old guard could easily make the dunk contest interesting again.
