The San Antonio Spurs are coming off a solid season as they finished second in the Western Conference with a 62-20 record and snapped their six-year playoff drought.
San Antonio also made their first NBA Finals appearance since 2014 and while they were unable to defeat the New York Knicks to win the title, it is clear that the Spurs are likely to be a championship threat thanks to their core led by Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.

Because of this, the Spurs are looking to upgrade their roster this offseason, which began with them selecting Jayden Quaintance and Tarris Reed Jr. in the first round of the draft, and they may look to make a splash in free agency to try and make a run back to the NBA Finals next season.
While San Antonio has been linked to multiple players thus far, a recent report revealed the franchise’s strategy during free agency.

According to The Stein Line’s Marc Stein, the Spurs are capping offers to forward targets in free agency for a strict two years.
Of course, this is a plan by the Spurs to keep their cap space clean by the time Castle’s rookie scale contract expires in 2028 as San Antonio looks to keep him on their roster for the long-haul alongside Wembanyama.
This is a massive report by Stein and one that is not a complete surprise as it is clear that the Spurs want to strategize their future cap space to make sure they are able to keep their young core together.
Because of this, some free agents who are looking for long-term contracts now may be unwilling to sign a two-year deal to head to San Antonio, which could cause the Spurs to miss out on some of the top free agents.

Of course, two of these players could be Rui Hachimura and LeBron James as they have both been linked to the Spurs in free agency as San Antonio tries to add much-needed forward depth.
Despite this, San Antonio has become a hot destination for many players looking to compete for a title alongside Wembanyama and the rest of the Spurs’ young core, which could bode well for the franchise to try and land one of the top available players left on the market this summer.
