Spencer Jones believes the biggest change since returning to the New York Yankees has come between his ears.

After struggling during his first stint in the majors, the rookie outfielder said he has focused on slowing the game down instead of trying to force results. That mindset paid off Wednesday night when he collected two doubles and three RBIs in New York's 10-5 win over the Seattle Mariners.

The performance came after manager Aaron Boone elevated Jones into the No. 3 spot in the lineup, a sign of growing confidence as the Yankees continue to navigate multiple injuries in their outfield.

According to Yankees beat writer Gary Phillips, Jones reflected on what he learned following his earlier demotion. He said he needed to slow the game down and trust himself instead of pressing, adding that he considers himself "a chill bird" who plays best when relaxed.

Jones' breakout came at an important time for New York. The Yankees remain without Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger, creating an opportunity for the rookie to earn everyday at-bats while the club continues its push in the American League East.

Despite the encouraging night, Jones still has room to grow. Through 47 games, he is batting .218 with five home runs, 18 RBIs and 49 strikeouts in 124 at-bats. His ability to cut down the strikeouts while maintaining his power remains one of the biggest areas of focus.

Wednesday's victory improved the Yankees to 68-52, keeping them in second place in the AL East behind the Tampa Bay Rays. Seattle fell to 56-65 and remained third in the AL West after dropping further behind the Houston Astros.

For Jones, though, the biggest takeaway was less about the box score and more about the approach. If he continues trusting the relaxed mindset that sparked Wednesday's performance, the Yankees may have another young contributor ready to seize an expanded role down the stretch.
