Cristiano Ronaldo is 41 years old and hasn't played at the highest level of European club soccer in years. But ask the next generation of players what "aura" means, and his name still comes up first.
Lamine Yamal made that clear after Spain's quarterfinal win over Belgium at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Barcelona forward was asked to explain some terms his generation regularly uses, and when "aura" came up, he didn't have to think long.
"It's something that a person transmits. When it arrives somewhere, there is something in it... It's like when you see someone in a movie and think, 'Wow,'" Yamal said, via O Jogo. "For example, Brad Pitt or someone like that. In football, Cristiano [Ronaldo] too. That would be a good example of aura."

Coming from a Barcelona player, that carries a little extra weight. Yamal grew up watching Ronaldo light up Real Madrid's rivals in La Liga, which makes the acknowledgment that much more telling.

It's not hard to understand where that reputation comes from. Ronaldo has scored 976 senior goals for club and country, the most in soccer history. He holds the record for goals in men's international soccer with 146 for Portugal.
His trophy cabinet includes five UEFA Champions League titles, three Premier League trophies, two La Liga titles, two Serie A titles with Juventus and international honors with Portugal including a UEFA European Championship and two UEFA Nations League titles.
His pull goes well beyond trophies too. Ronaldo is the most-followed athlete on social media with more than 674 million followers, and his presence at this World Cup was felt even after Portugal was eliminated.
Resale prices for quarterfinal tickets dropped from around $2,950 to roughly $1,200 in just three days after his exit. Fans across the United States and Canada had been hoping to see him play deep into the tournament.
That kind of impact doesn't fade quickly. When the next generation of players reach for an example of what aura actually looks like, Ronaldo is still the name they land on.
