Saturday was a rough one for the South Carolina Gamecocks football team as they got blown out by the Alabama Crimson Tide. But things were especially bad for star defender Dylan Stewart, who may have played his final down for head coach Shane Beamer.
On Sunday, the Gamecocks announced that Stewart is suspended indefinitely and that a more permanent solution to his status with the team would be reached in a few days.
The suspension comes on the heels of a fairly dreadful game where his behavior ranged from insubordinate to downright nasty.
Video showed Stewart losing his cool and delivering a solid punch to the head of an opposing Alabama player. He was penalized for the play.
There was another incident where Stewart seemed to stop a substitute from replacing him on the field, and others where he was seen either ignoring or back-talking his coaches.
End of the Line for Stewart?
Beamer said he was “embarrassed” by Stewart’s actions after the game, which is usually a bad sign.
“I saw the play that he got the penalty on. I didn’t see it until just now, and that’s unacceptable,” Beamer said. “That’s not how we do things around here. I’m embarrassed to see that because that’s not what we’re about.
“Didn’t see it during the game. I knew we had a penalty. I didn’t know what happened. We’ve got a lot of fiery, emotional, competitive guys, and I love that. When you’re in the arena, emotions are high.”

South Carolina are already 2-2 on the season and 0-2 in SEC play, and it’s only the month of September. Any hopes of reaching the College Football Playoff are pretty much dead in the water.
As he tries to salvage the season and ensure that the administration keeps him for the rest of the year, let alone bring him back for a seventh year, he needs to demonstrate a little more control over his players – even the emotional ones.
