Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham picked up her third technical foul of the season during the team's showdown against the Phoenix Mercury last week.
Early in the fourth quarter of the June 22 game, the referees issued five technical fouls between the Fever and Mercury after a skirmish that started with a heated exchange between Caitlin Clark and DeWanna Bonner.
Clark and Bonner got tangled near the rim, with the Fever star called for a foul and eventually a technical for clapping and instigating. Cunningham, for her part, approached the referee and asked why Bonner was not called for a tech when she was also involved.
As Cunningham pointed at Bonner, it started another intense war of words. The Fever enforcer continued to point at the Mercury forward to make her angrier, which worked as both players were issued technical fouls.
Alyssa Thomas and Myisha Hines-Allen received a double technical foul as well after getting into it with each other during the same sequence.

While Cunningham admitted that it was the "stupidest" thing she had ever done, she still felt that the technical foul call was not justified.
"My tech was the weakest thing I've ever seen in my life," Cunningham stated in the latest episode of her "Show Me Something" podcast.
Cunningham added that she "didn't say a word," which is why she thought the technical foul was not really warranted.
For what it's worth, it's not surprising that Cunningham got a technical foul. Considering how heated the moment was, her act could be seen as instigating, similar to what happened to Clark who was hit with a tech for clapping.
