Happy Birthday, Sophie Cunningham.
The Indiana Fever guard is turning 30 years old on Sunday. She's celebrating her birthday on gameday. The Fever are taking on the Atlanta Dream in a national TV game on Sunday evening.
Cunningham arrived at the arena in a matching birthday outfit, as the Indiana Fever bragged about the birthday girl.
"The birthday girl has arrived 🎂🎉," they wrote on Instagram.
Cunningham has become quite the figure in recent weeks, following her explosive ESPN profile, that caused a major debate among WNBA fans.
The former Missouri Tigers star said that it's "common sense" to keep transgender athletes out of women's sports.
In ESPN article, Cunningham said that she wanted to “protect young girls in the locker room” and that “they shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
Cunningham then double down while speaking to the WNBA media.
“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense,” Cunningham said to reporters. “And I think I’ll always believe in that. I think it’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category. I stand on what I said.”
Cunningham has said that she has no ill-will toward transgender athletes in general. However, she thinks women's sports should be protected.
“That’s why you have Title IX. That’s why you have some of the greats in women’s sports,” Cunningham said. “If Title IX and women’s sports weren’t protected, then you wouldn’t hear about any type of women in sport. And so, I think in the future, it’s just really important to protect.”
Meanwhile, the WNBA joined in on Cunningham's birthday wishes on Sunday.
"Join us in wishing a Happy Birthday to 2025 Commissioner’s Cup Champion, Sophie Cunningham! 🎉," they wrote.
The Fever, 22-12 on the year, are looking to surge at the right time heading into the 2026 postseason.
