Sophie Cunningham and the Indiana Fever are preparing for the resumption of the WNBA season following the 17-day FIBA Women’s World Cup break. The Fever are set to return to action on Friday in a road matchup against one of the league’s newest expansion teams, the Toronto Tempo.
On Monday, Cunningham took to social media to express her excitement about the Kansas City Chiefs kicking off their NFL campaign. The Chiefs host the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday night for a Week 1 matchup, and Cunningham is among the millions of fans who are looking forward to the rivalry clash.
The Chiefs sent a strong message ahead of their first game of the season. “THE. WAIT. IS. OVER ‼️,” the team posted on social media, using a graphic of star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Cunningham shared the post in her Instagram stories, along with her wordless reaction.
“@chiefs 🔥🔥” the WNBA veteran wrote.
Cunningham was born and raised in Columbia, Missouri. She has been a lifelong Chiefs fan and is clearly hyped for the new NFL season.
Much like the rest of the Chiefs faithful, Cunningham is looking forward to seeing Mahomes and Co. bounce back this year after a forgettable 2025 campaign. They missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2014 season and now aim to make amends.
Meanwhile, Cunningham and the Fever have four games left in the regular season. They have already clinched a playoff spot, but are still fighting for positioning heading into the postseason.
The Fever are currently 26-14 and fifth in the standings. However, they could still finish as high as No. 2 if they win all their remaining games.
