Sophie Cunningham and the Indiana Fever defeated the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday, 92-89. While the veteran guard contributed solidly to the victory, Makayla Timpson stole the show with a block-of-the-year candidate in the fourth quarter. The play garnered significant online attention, and Cunningham has now shared her thoughts on it.
Mercury guard Kahleah Copper drove to the basket and attempted a left-handed layup. It appeared that she was going to score two points, but Timpson had other plans. The Indiana center stuffed the ball on the backboard for the emphatic rejection. Cunningham shared the Fever's post on X on Thursday and added her reaction.
"I’ve never seen this happen in the W ever. Just filthy," Cunningham wrote.
The Missouri product finished with nine points, two and two assists. It was a bounce back performance for Cunningham. She was limited to two points, one rebound and one assist versus the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday as she played through back spasms.
On Thursday against Phoenix, the 6-foot-1 guard backed Kelsey Mitchell's game-high 29 points and eight assists, and Aliyah Boston's 21 points and nine rebounds.
Timpson failed to score but recorded five rebounds, one assist and one highlight block. Indiana played without Caitlin Clark in the second game of its back-to-back set, opting to rest her due to a lingering back issue.
Meanwhile, Phoenix received solid contributions from five players who scored in double digits. Alyssa Thomas led the way with 22 points, six rebounds and seven assists, while Copper also supplied 22 points, with five rebounds.
